Ven Pongal (Spicy White Pongal) is a
common and popular South Indian dish for breakfast.
Pongal is the
harvest festival celebrated by the tamilians. Pongal is the main dish for
thanking god for good harvest in this year.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Raw Rice
- 1/4 Cup Roasted Yellow Moong Dal
- 1 Piece Ginger
- 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- 4-5 Curry Leaves
- 10 Cashew Nuts
- 3 Tablespoons Ghee
- Salt to taste
Method
- Soak rice for 15 minutes & wash it.
- Cook rice, roasted moong dal added with salt using the pressure cooker or in a vessel.
- To cook in pressure cooker, add 3 ½ to 4 cups of water and leave for 3 whistles.
- In the meantime do the seasonings, Place a small pan on medium heat; add the ghee and roast the cashew nuts for a few seconds until it turns into crispy golden. Then add cumin seeds, pepper, ginger and curry leaves for 1 or 2 minutes.
- Once the steam is released from the cooker, add the seasoning mixture with the cooked pongal; Add the remaining ghee and mix well to mash it up.

1) To cook in a vessel, add 6 cups of water
2) Tastes good with combo of vada,
coconut chutney or sambar
